Four Types of Spousal Support
There are four types of spousal support:
- Permanent alimony, which is typically paid when one spouse did not work over the course of the marriage and was dependant on his or her spouse
- Temporary alimony, which is typical when there may not be a financial need for payments to continue
- Bridge-the-gap alimony, which is paid to help a spouse make the transition from married life to single life
- Rehabilitative alimony, which is paid to help a spouse obtain the education or training needed to become self-supporting
