Alimony

Caring Jacksonville Alimony Lawyers

Alimony or spousal support may or may not be an issue in your divorce, depending on how long you have been married. At the Law Office of Craig Gibbs in Jacksonville, we will help you analyze whether you are entitled to receive alimony or are obligated to pay it based on Florida law.

In Florida, we start with presumption that judges do not favor alimony. However, alimony may be awarded in long-term marriages. Although there are no hard and fast rules as to how long a marriage must last to be considered "long term", typically marriages must last at least ten years. Further, the recipient of alimony must have a financial need. The amount of alimony is not based on the fault of either party.

Four Types of Spousal Support

There are four types of spousal support:

  • Permanent alimony, which is typically paid when one spouse did not work over the course of the marriage and was dependant on his or her spouse
  • Temporary alimony, which is typical when there may not be a financial need for payments to continue
  • Bridge-the-gap alimony, which is paid to help a spouse make the transition from married life to single life
  • Rehabilitative alimony, which is paid to help a spouse obtain the education or training needed to become self-supporting

Our lawyers resolve alimony issues in divorce for clients throughout Florida's First coast, including military personnel at Mayport Naval Station and Jacksonville Naval Air Station (NAS-Jacks).
