When we look at “accident rate” we see the real picture. Duval’s 24,212 traffic accidents over a population of 957,755 – yield an accident rate of 2.53%, the highest in the state amongst Florida’s top 10 most populated counties. By comparison Miami-Dade, saw an accident rate of 2.38%. Densely populated Palm Beach County, only 1.80%.

In fatal traffic accidents, Jacksonville fairs much better. Only 0.59% of accidents in Duval County were fatal. Ranking #4 out of Florida’s top 10 counties.

High accident rate is likely correlated with geography. As America’s largest city by land area, Jacksonville is split in two by the St. John’s river, making it difficult for highway and transportation systems to operate efficiently. Seven bridges span the St. John’s alone. An accident on anyone of them, can halt traffic for hours and disrupt commute patterns miles away. It is not hard to understand why Duval County has the highest accident rate out of Florida’s top 10 counties.
