If you have been injured in a motor vehicle accident, it is important to understand the injuries that you may have sustained whether or not you feel pain right away. Many people think that only bones can be broken in an accident, but there are many other types of injuries that can occur.

Traumatic brain injuries

Also known as TBI, these injuries can range from concussions to more severe injuries, such as contusions and hemorrhages. TBIs can occur when the head hits an object or is violently shaken. Symptoms of a TBI can include headaches, dizziness, nausea, fatigue, difficulty concentrating, memory problems, mood swings and sleep problems, and some of these injuries may be permanent.

Spinal cord injuries

These injuries can occur when the spine gets damaged, causing partial or complete paralysis. Symptoms of a spinal cord injury can depend on the location and severity of the injury but often include pain, numbness, tingling, and weakness.

Femur fractures

The femur, or thigh bone, is the longest and strongest bone in the body. A femur fracture can occur when the bone is hit with great force, such as in a car accident. Sometimes, the bone can even shatter. Symptoms of a femur fracture include pain, swelling, and bruising in the thigh as well as difficulty walking. A femur fracture is often a particularly severe injury.

Internal bleeding

Internal bleeding can occur when an organ gets damaged in an accident. This type of injury can be very serious and may require surgery to correct it. Symptoms of internal bleeding can include abdominal pain, dizziness, shortness of breath, and nausea.

Soft tissue injuries

Soft tissue injuries in motor vehicle accidents often include strains, sprains, and contusions. Symptoms of a soft tissue injury can include pain, swelling, bruising, and difficulty moving the affected limb.

If you have been involved in a motor vehicle accident, it is important to seek medical attention right away even if you don’t think you have been injured. Some injuries, such as TBIs and internal bleeding, may not present symptoms immediately but can still be very serious.
