Driving habits that can cause accidents

On Behalf of | Apr 5, 2023 | Car Accident

Florida is home to some of the most popular cities in the United States, which means that Florida drivers spend a lot of time on crowded highways. While some car crashes are truly unavoidable accidents, there are some bad driving habits that increase the odds of an accident.

Driving too fast

Speeding is one of the most common causes of car accidents in the United States. Posted speed limits along the highways are there because traveling at or below this speed has been proven to promote safety. Drivers who routinely ignore these speed limits often cause car accidents that injure others and themselves.

Distracted driving

According to a recent study published by NHTSA, distracted driving causes approximately 30% of all car accidents in the United States. Texting while driving is certainly a hot-button issue, but it is not the only example of distracted driving. Eating, drinking, changing radio stations and other routine actions often cause serious highway accidents.

Driving while intoxicated

Everyone knows that driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol is a bad idea, yet people do it every day. Many people who successfully get themselves home from a night on the town once assume that they can continue to do so in the future. Every year, thousands of people lose their lives because drivers operate their vehicles while they are intoxicated. If you are going to drink or use drugs, do not plan to drive no matter the circumstances.

Reckless driving

Often sparked by road rage, reckless driving leads to thousands of vehicle accidents every year. Tailgating, unsafe lane changes and snap overtaking lead make the roadways unsafe for everyone. While being in a hurry happens to everyone, try to keep your emotions in check while driving.

It is everyone’s responsibility to make the highways a safer place. Breaking bad driving habits is a great first step.
